在可预见的近未来，我们的家里充斥着各种各样的机器人，有打扫卫生的，有做饭调酒的，有不可描述的……根据阿西莫夫机器人三原则的定义，机器人只能为人类谋取利益，但是当人类的要求和它接收到的指令相冲突时怎么处理呢？机器人会不会演化出自我意识而毁灭人类呢？机器人会不会产生爱、幽默感这些人类才有的情感呢？
